A DRIVER has been ordered to pay more than £500 after being found guilty of careless driving when overtaking a cyclist.

Paul Davies, 39, of Mor-Awel in Croesgoch, was due to appear at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court charged with driving without due care and attention.

Davies was alleged to have been driving a Volkswagen Golf on the A487 between Mathry and Panteg on January 30.

The court heard that Davies overtook a cyclist, but left “an unsafe distance” between him and the bicycle as there was an oncoming vehicle approaching in the opposite direction.

The incident was caught on the cyclist’s GoPro camera, and the court was told that the defendant’s driving “fell below that of a careful and competent driver”, and that he was driving without due care and attention.

The case came before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on October 2, and Davies was found guilty after the offence was proved in his absence.

He was handed a £440 fine and £110 in costs, and had six points added to his licence.
