A man from Pembrokeshire has written an emergency booklet to prepare households for potential disaster in the agriculture industry.
Peter Owen, who lives in Narberth, is almost 77 years old and lived through a time when most people relied on farming for food.
He served in the RAF and with high-profile wars happening around the world, Peter believes there is a chance the UK population will suffer without a greater focus on farming.
Peter said: “As a boy I lived without electricity. I was brought up in the farming community. There are risks in this country because farms are not producing enough food. A lot of our food is imported from other countries.
“It has a lot to do with our government managing our communities with no idea about farming. Instead, they are constantly building new motorways and houses, which means less and less land to grow food.
“If the wars around the world were to get worse then we would notice that need to be growing more food. The government ministers are talking with full stomachs. But things can catch up with us."
Peter thinks the UK need to be prepared for a potential shortage of food due to the political conflict worldwide.
The book ‘Civil Emergency – Planning Booklet for Households’ was released in August 2024.
It is a comprehensive guide providing advice for the absolute worst-case scenario with regards to mass starvation and loss of shelter.
In the beginning of the book, Peter goes into further detail as to why he decided to write such a guide.
The following pages provide a checklist of all the items needed during a civil emergency.
This includes what hand tools you need; what things you need to keep well-serviced and what stuff you should stock up on.
It then explains what sort of livestock you should have in your back garden to survive during desperate times.
Much of the book’s remainder is an individualised checklist with a list of foods – allowing you to note down how much of one food you have, along with its shelf life.
Peter’s book can be bought in Haverfordwest at Victoria Bookshop for £4.50 or at Army Surplus for £6.50.
The booklet is also available to purchase on Amazon.
