AN ABERAERON restaurant and guesthouse has been named amongst the top getaways for foodies in the UK.
The Hive and The Hive Townhouse, found on the harbour front in Aberaeron, have been included in a list of 20 of the best UK foodie breaks for the autumn by the Guardian.
The list puts together cosy inns and restaurants with rooms from across the country which boast menus as enticing as the scenery.
And when it comes to a picturesque setting, it’s no surprise that The Hive has been included.
The bar and kitchen underwent a major revamp in 2020 and boasts a comfortable lounge area, restaurant and a large harbourside courtyard – and is well-known for its honey ice cream.
“Situated on the harbour edge of the picturesque Georgian town of Aberaeron. Our aim is to offer a flexible, relaxed and accessible dining area where everybody is welcome,” reads The Hive website.
“Our chefs use mainly local produce when available and produce seasonal menus. Our menu aims to satisfy every taste.
“From full Welsh breakfast or eggs Royale, signature burgers, fresh, top quality local fish and shellfish, vegetarian options, delicious, fresh salads and not to forget, our world famous and award winning honey ice cream.”
Brothers Rhys and Rhodri Davies were granted planning permission to renovate the townhouse – a former solicitors office – in 2022, and over the following year it was transformed in to a guesthouse featuring six luxury bedrooms across the three floors.
“Traditional and luxury go hand in hand in our rooms. Original exposed stone walls work in harmony with the luxurious touches of fluted velvet headboards, marble bathroom vanity units as well as some limited-edition artwork by local artist, Lola Chapman,” The Hive Townhouse website reads.
“We have strived to maintained the original Georgian style, whilst adding a modern, seaside Scandinavian touch.
“The views, colours and the atmosphere will help feel at home and the sound of the calming waves and swaying boats will guarantee full relaxation throughout your stay.”
Kevin Rushby, of the Guardian, described the food on offer at The Hive as “seriously good fare”.
“Unpretentious and friendly, the restaurant can be deceptive – fish and chips and burgers on the menu – but sit down and tuck in, there is more to it,” he said.
“At Townhouse by Hive, polished wood and bare-stone features are matched with warm soft furnishings and beautiful bathrooms. Shuttered windows give fine views of the river and harbour, including the significant remodelled sea defences.
“The Hive still makes great ice-cream and, better still, all residents get a complimentary cone of their choice.”
