A selfless Pembrokeshire pensioner asked for friends and family to mark her birthday by making a donation to charity.

Hilary Hitchings celebrated her 80th birthday by requesting donations to two charities, Wales Air Ambulance and Paul Satori Hospice at Home, instead of gifts.

The former chairwoman of the RNLI fundraising committee received £1,040 from friends and family at her birthday party, which was split between the two causes.

Ms Hitchings, from Hook, followed the example of her partner, Colwyn Elliot, who also asked for donations instead of gifts for charity when he turned 80.

Mr Elliot received £554, which was also donated to Wales Air Ambulance.

The couple recognise and support the work of Wales Air Ambulance, which provides a valuable service in the rural area of Pembrokeshire.

Laura Coyne, Wales Air Ambulance’s community fundraising manager, said: "Happy 80th birthday to Hilary.

"It is lovely to hear stories like this, especially during these difficult times.

"Hilary raised an incredible amount for two important charities and the Wales Air Ambulance is extremely grateful.

"It is wonderful to hear that Hilary’s partner also did the same when he celebrated his 80th birthday, what a kind-hearted couple they are.

"A huge thank you to everyone who donated to celebrate Hilary’s milestone birthday.

"The money raised will help us to continue to provide our lifesaving service across Wales 24/7.

"Thank you so much, you have all played a part in saving lives in Wales."

Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and, if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury.

For the patient, this can mean hours saved when compared to standard care and is proven to greatly improve survival and early recovery.
