A local lifeboat was called to evacuate a crew member requiring hospital treatment from a warship early this morning.

Angle RNLI’s All-Weather Lifeboat was tasked to a medical evacuation from the HMS Somerset, anchored just off St Ann’s Head, at 8.05am this morning, (Tuesday, October 1).

A 20-year-old woman on board the ship was suffering from appendicitis and needed to be transferred to hospital for treatment.

The lifeboat launched and located the warship and soon set about coming alongside the vessel.

The crew member and her colleague made their way down the side of the warship via a pilot ladder and transferred to the lifeboat.

(Image: Angle RNLI lifeboat) (Image: Angle RNLI lifeboat) The woman was made comfortable and quickly transported back to the Port Authority Jetty, where an ambulance was waiting to take her to hospital.

With the casualty in the care of paramedics, the crew were stood down and the lifeboat was ready for service once again by 10am.

The crew and commanding officer of HMS Somerset presented Angle Lifeboat volunteers with a gift of a ships crest and a card thanking them for their "willing, efficient and timely support, the height of professionalism".
