A legendary local boxing coach has received a lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contribution to the sport.
Ralph Gammer is a boxing coach at Pembroke and Pembroke Dock ABC who has trained boxers to compete at the Commonwealth Games and win National Championships.
He is the father of Scott ‘The Hammer’ Gammer who turned professional in 2002 and captured the British Heavyweight Title four years later.
Ralph Gammer’s wife, Denise said: “I’m chuffed for him. It’s so nice for other people to see his achievements. We’re so proud of him. As a family, he is our king.
“The kids at the club are in awe of him. He’s so humble. His son went on to win a professional championship and he’s travelled all over the world. Now he’s agreed to also coach some disabled boxers.
“It’s only when he looks back at his life when he realises how much he has achieved and what a positive impact he has had.”
One of the best moments of Ralph’s career came when he met Mike Tyson’s former promoter Don King.
Denise continued: “During one of Scott’s fights, Don King was in the crowd chanting for him to win. It was such a surreal moment to have someone like that showing his support.”
Ralph was a boxer in his own right many years ago, competing from his late teen years to his mid-twenties.
Since then, the Gammer family legacy has lived on with his sons and now his grandchildren deciding to box.
Pembroke and Pembroke Dock ABC posted on their Facebook page: “A very proud moment in Pembroke Boxing Club history with Ralph Gammer being awarded a lifetime achievement award.
“Ralph is a legend within our local community and the sport due to his years of dedication and towards changing lives and creating champions. Congratulations Ralph from everybody at Pembroke Boxing Club, past and present.”
Pembroke Dock ABC is chaired by Christopher McEwen, the chairman of Great Britain Disability Boxing and a former soldier with bipolar disorder.
The club takes pride in offering inclusive boxing sessions to those with disabilities and hosts sessions every Thursday evening from 5pm to 8:30pm.
Meanwhile, junior and senior classes take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
