A 98-year-old former head gardener at Picton Castle was among the guests at a concert of his son’s music.

Lyndon Hilling returned to his birthplace to conduct the county premiere of his suite for recorders, entitled ‘Picton’, at the Picton Castle's Courtyard Gallery.

The three-movement suite was performed by the specially formed Picton Recorder Ensemble.

More than 70 people attended the concert, which was a long-held dream of Mr Hilling, who was born in the castle in the 1950s.

His father, Duncan Hilling, who is now 98, was the principal guest at the concert, along with other family members.

Mr Hilling’s ‘Picton’ was written in 2020 to celebrate Duncan and his late wife Audrey’s platinum wedding anniversary.

The evening also featured performances from the early music group La Volta, led by Stuart Evans and Clare Primett.

The concert brought together recorder players from across south and west Wales and as far as Herefordshire.

The programme included music by celebrated 16th-century Welsh composer Thomas Tomkins, Mr Hilling’s own settings of Psalm 139, and A G Prys-Jones' A Song of Caldey.

La Volta began the evening with a performance in the castle’s great hall, playing medieval music on a selection of early instruments.

The finale saw the ensemble performing ‘Picton’, a suite reflecting the beauty of the countryside and the composer’s early life at Picton Castle.
