Fears that streetlights on a "dangerous" Haverfordwest road with a history of accidents could be switched off have been allayed.

At the last Haverfordwest Town Council meeting, a discussion took place about a proposal from the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) to turn off the lights on the A4076 at Freemens Way.

The road runs from Merlin Bridge Roundabout to Salutation Square Roundabout and has a sharp bend.

Although Amey Construction, a contractor responsible for installing street lighting, says there are no plans to deactivate them, councillors raised concerns about the possibility of increased danger for pedestrians and drivers if they were switched off.

County Councillor for the Castle Ward, Thomas Baden Tudor said: “I am particularly concerned if the lights illuminating Freemens Way are turned off at night because of the potential increased danger and reduction in safety that motorists and pedestrians could endure.

“I am aware of the road traffic collisions that take place on this stretch of the road, including unfortunate issues surrounding Freemens Way overpass bridge which people use to threaten and sadly have successfully used to end their lives.

“Turning the lights off would only exacerbate these situations and make the work of our emergency services that much more difficult. This is certainly not a good idea.”

Last February, Freemens Way was closed after concerns were raised over the welfare of a woman.

Meanwhile, in December 2023, the road was shut following a traffic collision that resulted in two people being taken to hospital and the attendance of two emergency ambulances.

A spokesperson for Amey Construction said: "There are no proposed changes to the current street lighting arrangement or the speed limit along Freemans Way.

"With street lighting present, this would naturally default the speed limit to 20mph, however for sections which are chosen to remain at the national speed limit, these require a derestriction traffic order.

"The extents plan is for the derestriction traffic order which allows Freemans Way to be signed at national speed limit whilst maintaining the current street lighting."

SWTRA did not respond to a request for comment.
