A popular Haverfordwest fair will return to town but at a different site next month.
The Portfield Fair will take place at the Rifleman Field Car Park instead of Scotchwell Car Park from October 2 to October 5, ensuring a greater selection of rides and stalls.
The family fair is a long-standing tradition in Haverfordwest and will operate from 5pm to 9:30pm on weekdays and 2pm to 9:30pm on weekend.
Current Sheriff of Haverfordwest, Cllr Jill Owens said: “This is such great news for the town. When I was Mayor, one of my goals was to secure the tradition of the Portfield Fair and find a more suitable site.
“I believe this has been attempted before but I am delighted that in collaboration with the County Council and the Showmen’s Guild, we have achieved our goal this year.
“There is still more work to be done for next year, but it is fantastic news that for October 2024, the Fair will be situated on Rifleman Car Park, not too far away from where it was historically, which many will remember.
“Our thanks also go to the many local residents who took the time and effort to respond to the consultation exercise.”
This comes after the fair was at risk of not happening at all this year.
Haverfordwest Town Council asked residents to provide feedback on whether they favoured the fair getting relocated.
Locals were given until 4pm on September 10 to return the fair flyer to the town’s council officer with feedback or send an email with a yes or no answer.
Henry Studt, Chairman of the South Wales and Northern Ireland Section of the Showman’s Guild added: “On behalf of the members and the committee of the South Wales and Northern Ireland Section, I would like to express our gratitude to you and everyone on the town council for your hard work in making the fair possible at the Rifleman Field Car Park.
A big thank you to Cllr Jill Owens, and the Town Clerk, and everyone who took the time to assist with the distribution of leaflets and the collation of responses.
“It was wonderful to see how a team effort and the collaboration of the PCC and HTC resulted in such a positive outcome.”
Haverfordwest Town Council worked with the Showmen’s Guild and the County Council to relocate the October fair.
The council eventually wants to bring the fair back to St Thomas Green – a venue some town residents will remember from their childhood.
