A Welsh town has been left stunned after one of its biggest hotels ceased trading suddenly.

The historic Unicorn Hotel in Llanidloes, which is one of the main destinations in the town, has ceased trading after the business went into voluntary liquidation.

A notice of liquidation was posted on the front of the hotel on Monday (September 2), confirming that the business had ceased trading on September 1.

In the notice to creditors, it added: “The directors having regard to the company’s financial position, have decided to take steps to place it into creditors’ voluntary liquidation.”

The news has been met with sadness locally as a major part of the town’s High Street has disappeared almost without warning.

Llanidloes Councillors, Gareth Morgan and Glyn Preston both expressed sadness at the recent development.

“It’s come as a shock,” said Cllr Morgan. “The business seemed successful. It was maintained to a high standard with excellent food service and accommodation.

“It is sad to see it happening we could do without the bad news however the licensed trade is going through a very difficult time right now. I know other businesses are under pressure."

Cllr Preston added his concern for the high street in the town and the staff who will be affected by the closure.

“It is sad news for the town, that we’re losing another longstanding hotel and restaurant from our High Street,” said Cllr Preston.

“Most of all, my thoughts go out to the staff who have lost their jobs, at a very difficult time for many.”

The news was met with shock and sadness amongst residents online. One said: “How sad, thinking of the super staff who have been so helpful and courteous to us, family and friends who have enjoyed our visits for meals and afternoon teas."

Another added: “What a shame, hope all the staff that worked there can get other employment.”
