Nearly 1,000 plastic ducks took to the water of Saundersfoot harbour recently to help the village’s Rotary Club raise £1,000 for the RNLI.
Saundersfoot Rotary Club’s Duck Races are favourite summer events in the community, and the most recent, on August 24, was one of the most successful yet.
Duck sales, at £1 a time, began at 9.30am and were completed in record time, with all 960 of the cheerful creatures bagged up by 2pm, in readiness for their launch at 4pm.
This was set on its way by the chairman of Saundersfoot RNLI, Anne Slade, assisted by around 25 volunteers from both Rotary and the local RNLI branch.
Prizes awarded
More than 1,000 spectators cheered the ducks on their way on their 15-minute journey to the finish line, and prizes were awarded to the purchasers of the three first-placed ducks.
All proceeds from sales and donations were pledged to the RNLI.
“Being set in a coastal community, Saundersfoot Rotary is always proud to be able to support the courageous work undertaken by RNLI,” said Rotary team member John.
The following day, he dressed up as Quackers to present the cheque for £1,000 to Stormy Stan, on behalf of the Saundersfoot RNLI branch.
John added: "The event was a huge effort, with lots of work to set up and clear away, but it is all made worthwhile seeing all the smiling faces and hearing the laughter of spectators, all the while supporting such a vital cause.
"A big thank you to Anne Slade, chair of RNLI Saundersfoot branch, for starting the race, and to the staff at Saundersfoot Harbour for their help and support.
"Of course, we could not have achieved that without the support of all those that gave generously for this great cause.
