A new exhibition is being held at a Pembrokeshire landmark.

"Coeden: Amidst the Trees" has been delighting visitors at Upton Castle Gardens this summer.

The new showcase, set to run until September 15, explores the bond between trees and humans.

Upton Castle is offering visitors a unique chance to engage with contemporary sculpture and art through the eyes of artists including Dilys Jackson MRSS, Rebecca Newnham FRSS, Harvey Hood FRSS, and Ros Burgin MRSS, courtesy of the Royal Society of Sculptors.

The word 'Coeden' translates to a 'singular tree' in Welsh.

Aimed at fostering deep conversations about the environment, the exhibition beckons visitors to wander through the historical gardens and inside the medieval castle.

Here, they can stumble upon inspiring sculptures tucked away in flowerbeds and spread across lawns.

The curators have thoughtfully set up the display to utilise the natural beauty of the Arboretum and the Celtic Rainforest, where diverse vegetation, including fungi, ferns, and lichens, thrive.

The visitors can embark on a sculpture trail, discovering works of art meticulously placed alongside towering trees.

Featuring 11 artists, the show is expected to spotlight our complicated relationship with trees and woodlands and its effects on our fate.

Among the highlights is James Doran-Webb's monumental sculptures made from decades-old Malave driftwood.

This majestic tree, once widespread in Asia, is now endangered.

As part of his reforestation project, "Eighty Thousand Trees," Mr Doran-Webb plants a seedling in the deforested areas of Cebu, Philippines, for each kilogram of driftwood he collects.

An additional feature is the Long Gallery, usually closed to the general public, which showcases Gwyn Roberts's rugged landscape paintings and Neil Wilkin's vessels.

Mr Wilkin's larger glass sculptures also grace the landscape.

Another first-time feature at Upton Castle is the projected 'Fractal Tree.' An immersive and interactive work by Sarah Beauclerk, this projection paints the Chapel Wall with abstract imagery of a tree's life cycle.

Upton Castle Gardens, an RHS partner garden, is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm until September 15, 2024.

Tickets are available at the gate, priced at £7.50 for adults and £2.50 for children.

For groups of more than 12, garden tours and exhibition tours are available.
