Fishguard Carnival has been in full swing all afternoon, with a lively and colourful procession getting the party started.
Organised by Fishguard and District Round Table, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2024, the Saturday August 24 event featured an ‘anything goes’ theme to give floats and fancy dress free reign to their creativity.
Fishguard’s mayor and mayoress, Cllr Billy Shaw and Sarah Shaw, were amongst those entering into the spirit of the occasion, and appeared as Shrek and Fiona.
There’s been a great turn-out for the carnival, with the added bonus of fine weather.
One carnival-goer, who was pleased not to have unfurled her umbrella, said: “There’s a fabulous atmosphere and a real community feel at this great event.”
No carnival is complete without its royalty, and this year’s Carnival King, Queen, Prince and Princess were Thomas Mabe, Carli-May Rayner, Jonni Healy and Emily Evans.
Floats and walking entries lined up on Goodwick Moor car park ahead of making their merry way to Lota Park, with judging en route on the Golden Mile.
Community organisations taking part included Fishguard Sea Cadets, FADDS theatre company, Parc Cerrig Community Garden, North Pembrokeshire Ladies Darts, Fishguard Round Table and Ladies Circle, Fishguard Greening Group and Fishguard RNLI.
Goodwick Brass Band played some stirring tunes along the way to set the pace for the procession.
The carnival field was a lively sight, with a bouncy castle, fairground rides, stalls, games and refreshments, including the Round Table’s barbeque.
“The energy is amazing,” said a Round Table spokesman on Facebook.
To add to the fun, there was entertainment throughout the afternoon from the Welsh Whisperer, the Lowri Jones School of Dance and Aberjazz – the latter two also bringing their own floats to the procession.
Fishguard Round Tablers were delighted with the success of the day, which they described as 'incredible'.
In a post on their Facebook page, they said: "We at Fishguard Round Table want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, from the amazing float entries to the dedicated stallholders.
"And of course, a massive thank you to all of you who came out to support and celebrate with us - your energy and enthusiasm made the day unforgettable.
"Here’s to our amazing community and to many more events like this!"
