Two men have been given six-month suspended jail sentences after what the RSPCA has termed the "most significant badger baiting case in over a decade".

Peter McGuigan, 37, and Simon Evans, 40, both from Llandysul were found guilty of four charges of badger-baiting brought by the RSPCA last month.

The pair had been discovered in the woods at Boncath on October 14th 2006 with bloodied shovels, T bars and hunting dogs.

They were in the vicinity of a badger sett and had dug a metre deep hole. One of their dogs had a badger in its mouth and a loud squealing noise of a badger in distress could be heard.

McGuigan and Evans were sentenced today. As well as the suspended sentence they were ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid community work.

They were also banned from keeping dogs for seven years and must pay a total of £8,000 in costs.
