Dear editor - No one can doubt the increasing need and demand for energy worldwide. Therefore, producing safe, efficient and secure energy is imperative, both morally and economically.
Climate change policy locally, nationally and internationally is committed to reducing CO2 emissions. From this perspective it seems almost cavalier for Pembrokeshire County Councillors to support the proposed power station at Pennar.
The fuel will be imported, the technology is not the most efficient available and there will be significant heat which could be used productively if a combined heat and power system were adopted. Added to which, 6million tons of CO2 will be emitted each year.
It is true that many jobs will be created, but these will be during the construction phase only. With unemployment locally at under 2%, it is inevitable that labour will have to be attracted from beyond the sub-region. As with LNG development, housing the labour force will put intense pressure on the private rented sector and add to the existing 4,000 people in the county in need of housing.
This is not a tirade against a power station, but it is a request for a more sconsidered and responsible approach to energy generation, which requires that the environmental and social impacts be recognised and alleviated, rather than ignored.
Charlie Mason Pantybigni, Hermon.
