Dear Editor - Regarding Fury at green light for homes' (December 19th).
The Joint Unitary Development Plan has resulted in the cost of houses and land reaching extraordinary values, putting ownership and ability to rent outside the reach of much of the local population.
It was worrying that the chairman of the community council queried the need for providing affordable housing in the national park. He also stated there is plenty of land in Manorbier outside the national park boundary'.
But, the entire ward of Manorbier is inside the national park boundary. The only section of land with development potential is at Jameston.
In seconding the recommendation for approval of the development, Sue Perkins said we had not done very well to date' in providing affordable houses in the national park.
My experience has always been that people in Pembrokeshire have welcomed new residents and provided for those who wish to stay in the community.
We have to protect the coastal areas of Pembrokeshire but we must maintain a practical and realistic approach.
One way to satisfy all these needs is to support small-scale developments in and around existing settlements that are in keeping with the homes already there and cater for any particular needs.
County councillor Malcolm Calver Gleann-na-Coille, Pembroke Road, Manorbier.
