TENBY fire service has unveiled its first female firefighter.

Cindy Richards joined the service a few months ago and has now been officially unveiled in an unprecedented step by one of the pillar organisations of the Tenby Community.

Single mum Cindy chose the fire service as it worked more with her commitments as a mum and so decided to join what she described as her ‘new family’.

“I started the application process in January and the training at the beginning of February.

“I can honestly say it’s the hardest thing I’ve done physically, and I’ve done Iron Man Wales!!

“There were times when I didn’t think I was strong enough, but the instructors were amazing with me! They encouraged me to keep going.

“I’d been interested in the Ambulance service, but after a bit of research it would mean leaving my job and going back to college. I’m a single mum so this wasn’t an option financially, but I needed something more to do, so helping the local community by joining the fire service seemed like something I’d enjoy.

“Since joining I’ve realised more and more that in the fire service it’s all about teamwork, no one is ever on their own.”

Cindy wants to encourage more female firefighters to the service after describing how everyone she has met has been so encouraging towards the service’s first woman firefighter.

“There aren’t enough females in the fire service,” said Cindy, “but I feel that this is certainly changing.

“Everyone I’ve met through training or on shouts have been so nice and encouraging.

“The firefighters in Tenby are a renowned part of the community and are seen to be friendly and very approachable, I’m super honoured to be a part of their team.”

Cindy joined the service along with local carpenter Luke Hartland. A representative of Tenby Fire said the new recruits have made a great start.

“After giving them a couple of months to settle in we think it’s time we introduce the newest members to the crew.

“Both have settled in very well and are progressing well with their development.”
