STEPHEN Crabb has called for an 'official investigation' into the paddleboarding tragedy in Haverfordwest at the weekend as local politicians offered condolences to the victims.

MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, Mr Crabb said the tragedy had shocked the community and an official investigation would need to be carried out after three people died as a group of paddleboarders got into trouble on the weir in Haverfordwest.

"I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the circumstances in which three paddleboarders tragically lost their lives right in the heart of our county town in Haverfordwest on Saturday.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with their family members at this difficult time, and for the woman who remains in critical condition at Withybush Hospital.

"This tragic news has been deeply felt by the community here in Pembrokeshire, and now it is right that there is an official investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this awful tragedy, in the hope of preventing this type of incident from ever happening again.”

Preseli MS Paul Davis said the events were 'heart-breaking'.

"I’d like to pay tribute to those emergency workers who desperately tried to rescue everyone involved.

"The events on the River Cleddau in Haverfordwest are heart-breaking and I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones."
