BROAD Haven Playgroup has taken its first steps towards becoming plastic free by having milk delivered in glass bottles rather than plastic.
“It was really simple, I just called Mathias Dairies and asked if we could switch to glass and Richard arranged for our next delivery and all future deliveries to be in glass bottles!” said Sally Bell, of the playgroup.
“We were going through over 10 plastic two litre bottles per week, so that's over 390 plastic bottles a year we are saving now.”
Erin Watkins, the playgroup leader, has been educating the children about plastic and recycling and has been explaining how they can now wash out milk bottles and send them back to be refilled and reused.
Erin and her team regularly teach the children about looking after the environment and recycling, visit the beach to do litter picks.
As well as switching to glass milk bottles, the playgroup will now be providing plastic free/biodegradable baby wipes and nappy sacks.
The group encouraging parents to provide plastic free lunch boxes, without cling film, as well as decanting yogurt tubes and pouches into reusable tupperware tubs.
Erin also runs a Parents and Tots group at Broad Haven Village Hall every Friday during term time from 1pm to 2.30pm for all children from anywhere in Pembrokeshire aged birth to four to come and play.
Healthy snacks are provided for the children and there is always tea and coffee flowing for the adults.
It is a great place for mums, dads, and grandparents to meet new friends and for the children to socialise with other tots.
Broad Haven playgroup and Broad Haven Parents and Tots are helping with the campaign to make the villages of Broad Haven and Little Haven plastic free.
