Residents of Fishguard and Goodwick are urged to get green fingered this spring and summer to help the town’s campaign to win gold in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.

The twin towns have been entered into the competition following their success in last year’s Wales in Bloom, where they won the Small Coastal Resort Category.

Fishguard and Goodwick will go head to head with six other coastal towns and are the only Welsh finalists.

The tireless work of volunteers of Greening Fishguard and Goodwick was key in the 2017 success.

“Our towns are brilliant,” Julia Moffett coordinator of Greening F&G said. “There are so many people doing their bit to make Fishguard and Goodwick a great place to live and visit.

“I am so proud of what we have achieved last year and really excited about our towns being a finalist in Britain in Bloom 2018. What an opportunity.”

POINT has been one group involved in the greening project so far. Senior Youth Worker, Kate Mitchel, said: “Young people have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Greening group in Fishguard and Goodwick.

“By working together with the older volunteers, the young people have gained a great sense of pride in their community and have developed a keen interest in gardening.

“POINT have involved young people in their own garden to grow veg. which is incorporated into meals made at the Popworks Youth Centre.

“Working in the community has helped them learn about gardening and develop skills which they have transferred to the youth centre garden. The young people always say how much they enjoy the greening sessions in the community.”

The whole community is now invited to put on the best possible show for the judges and get behind F&G Winning for Wales in Britain in Bloom.

“Anything goes as long as it involves gardening in a residential, community or business premises,” said Julia.

“We would love to hear about any plans you might have to get Fishguard and Goodwick greener.

“The benefits of Fishguard and Goodwick being winners are too many to mention but include increased tourist activity, potentially throughout the year; the ability to attract inward investment and corporate sponsorship as well as an opportunity to take a civic pride in the towns.”

Judging begins the 1st week of July. If you want to find out more visit or message Greening Fishguard & Goodwick’s Facebook page. Or contact Julia Moffett on 07887 566176 or julia.anne.moffett@gmail.com If you want to just chat through an idea, especially for Goodwick phone, Lynda on 01348 875094.

Some suggestions which could really make the difference to the towns winning this most prestigious award include:

  • · Plant up the front of your home or business to look wonderful for the competition. Why not try a hanging basket or window boxes.
  • · As an organisation or individual you could adopt and look after a Fishguard & Goodwick planter (it must be in a public area) Greening will deliver and fill it with “soil” the rest will be down to you.
  • · Talk to your neighbours about what you can do to make your neighbourhood look fabulous this Summer, get planting and get creative.
  • · Organise a community litter pick in your area in the weeks leading up to the judges’ visit.
  • · Volunteer on the judging day….
  • · Join a Greening F&G working party (advertised on our FB page or ask to be included in the email list) · Grow an extra plant for Greening this year… and donate it to them.
