HOLLYWOOD star Rhys Ifans has posted a video to give a timely boost to the community effort to buy the iconic Tafarn Sinc pub and save it from closure.
The Pembrokeshire-born actor, currently filming in Berlin, has posted a video of himself on-line extolling the virtues of the pub in the heart of the Preseli, which is currently up for sale but will close if no buyer comes forward by the end of the year
He is a frequent customer when in the area visiting his relatives and has promised to buy several shares. Single shares in the Rosebush pub can be bought for £200 or up to a maximum of £20,000.
The aim is to raise around £300,000 by the end of September in order to stave off closure and turn the pub into a community-run asset. The fund currently stands at around £80,000.
Fellow Pembrokian and BBC ‘Wales Today’ news programme anchor-man, Jamie Owen, has also joined the venture. As he owns a property nearby he also is a frequent visitor to the restaurant.
“Tafarn Sinc is a much-loved part of this community. It’s an important part of the landscape of North Pembrokeshire. Good luck to the community in their efforts to give it a new lease of life,” was his message.
Other celebrities who have already given the venture their backing are BBC ‘News at Ten’ anchor-man, Huw Edwards; opera singer, Trystan Ll?r; rugby commentator, Wyn Gruffydd; ‘Heno’ presenter, Mari Grug and local entertainers, Bois y Frenni.
Acting chairman of Cymdeithas Tafarn Sinc, Hefin Wyn, said: “The fact that so many celebrities are backing the campaign proves that Tafarn Sinc is an unique and special institution. They have all been there. It would be a tragedy if the place were to be closed.
“More contributions post haste are required in order to reach the target within the stipulated time. Information on how to buy shares can be seen at www.tafarnsinc.cymru”.
