THEIR Finest – a wartime romantic comedy filmed extensively in Pembrokeshire – gets the red carpet treatment at its Welsh premiere, hosted by the Welsh Government and BAFTA Cymru next Tuesday, April 18.
Economy Secretary Ken Skates will welcome guests to the event at Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, which will be attended by actor Bill Nighy, who will join the film’s producer Amanda Posey, screenwriter Gaby Chiappe and Lissa Evans, author of the original book Their Finest Hour and a Half, in conversation with Owen Sheers following the screening.
The film was funded by the Welsh Government’s Media Investment Budget alongside BBC Films and Pinewood Group, with Pinewood Pictures a sponsor of the Welsh Premiere.
Their Finest saw filming in many locations in the county during late 2015.
Pembrokeshire locations include Trecwn Valley, Freshwater West, Porthgain Harbour, Haverfordwest’s Palace Cinema and the Cresselly Arms, Cresswell Quay.
It tells the story of Catrin Cole, played by former Bond girl Gemma Arterton, who lands herself a job writing copy for propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by movie producer Buckley, played by Sam Claflin, famous for his role in The Hunger Games movies.
With the country’s morale at stake, Catrin, Buckley and a colourful crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation.
It also stars Bill Nighy, who has also featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Economy Secretary Ken Skates said: “Their Finest is a great example of the widespread benefits that TV and film production can bring to Wales – providing work and experience for crews, sustaining a range of specialist support businesses, boosting the hospitality sector and highlighting the expertise we have within Wales.
“Film and TV production is one of our priority sectors and I am particularly pleased that the extensive use of locations around Wales is playing a key role in supporting regional economies and jobs while also providing an invaluable promotion for our tourism industry.”
Lionsgate UK will release Their Finest in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on April 21.
Their Finest joins other recent films which have promoted the county on the silver screen, including Bad Education, Me Before You, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Robin Hood, and Snow White and the Huntsman.
