A MASSIVE wave of financial support totalling £47,530 has been given to over 60 charities and good causes as a result of the Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim.
Despite the wild water and gales, 1,587 swimmers and thousands of spectators welcomed in 2016 at this year’s event.
The swim, organised by Saundersfoot Festivities, has raised over £half a million in its 32-year history.
The presentation evening was held at the St Brides Spa Hotel last Thursday, when thanks were given to all the swimmers, sponsors, commercial sponsors and helpers for their contribution to the swim.
The money raised by the swimmers benefited over 61 charitable and worthy causes,” said Festivities chairman Martyn Williams. “The generosity of the commercial sponsors ensured that every penny raised was donated to charity”.
Amongst the recipients were a number of charities that received at least £1,000, which included Macmillan Cancer Support, HOPE, Breast Cancer Care, Daniel Bridle Bone Cancer Care and Trallwm Animal Sanctuary.
The largest cheque of £7,100 was presented to Martlett’s Hospice.
The main guests at the presentation were Nicola Hirst and Sarah Hoss from the main sponsor, Powell’s Cottage Holidays, who helped to present the numerous certificates, awards and cheques.
The winner of the Betty Duncan Cup for the highest-sponsored swimmer was Monica Vanner who, with her team, raised £2,000.
The winners of the best group fancy dress was Malin House Hotel for their tremendous Star Wars characters and Millennium Falcon.
Mr Williams also thanked the emergency services, safety personnel, stewards, bucket collectors and sponsors for their involvement in the event, as well as St Brides Spa Hotel for their hospitality and continued support.
Plans are well under way for the 2017 New Year’s Day Swim.
