Five Pembrokeshire schools were represented in the area final for the Rotary Club’s prestigious Young Musician of the Year competition.
Flautist Daniel Jones from Tasker-Milward School, Haverfordwest won the instrumental section of the contest, with Rowan Staden-Coates of Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest winning the voice section. Both will now take part in the District finals to be held at Cowbridge Schol early in March. If successful, they will go on to the UK National finals later this year.
The area final was held at the Nant-y-Ffin Hotel, Llandissilio, when a capacity audience enjoyed performances from three vocalists and four instrumentalists on saxophone, clarinet, violin and flute.
In addition to Daniel and Rebecca, the contestants were Rhiannon Ashley (Ysgol y Preseli) and Rebecca Beynon (Bush School, Pembroke) in the vocal category, together with Eleanor Hodgson, violin (Bush), Talfan Jenkins, saxophone, Ysgol y Preseli and Georgina Pollard, clarinet (Milford Haven School).
The evening was organised and compered by Vanessa Walker of the Fishguard and Goodwick Rotary Club, who is also assistant vice-governor for Rotary’s Area 2.
The judges were John Jones, Denise Price and Dr Dick Russill.
