Local environmental charity, Transition Bro Gwaun, is more than half way to generating enough money for Fishguard’s community turbine and there is still time to invest.
The group needs to raise £280,000 in loans and donations for its 50% share in the Abergwaun Community Turbine. This money will be used to purchase and install a 45 metre turbine at Trebover Farm, Llanychaer this summer.
The opportunity to invest a minimum of £1,000 in the turbine for a term of five years, at an interest rate of 4%, will be available until the end of February.
The turbine, which will produce 600,000 KWh per year, the equivalent of powering 150 homes, is the first community wind project in Wales initiated through the Welsh Government’s Community Renewables Programme. Transition Bro Gwaun’s share of the turbine’s profits will be ploughed into grants for low carbon community projects, such as insulation, electric car clubs and local food growing or preserving projects.
“This project will bring significant local benefit by returning the profit from clean energy generation to the area,” said Transition Bro Gwaun trustee, Tom Latter.
“TBG’s share of the profit will be used to help fund further low carbon community projects to enhance the resilience of the local economy.
“Coming at a time when international climate talks struggle to make real progress, community initiatives like this will be crucial in building confidence for strong government action if society is to meet the challenges of climate change.’ For information contact Tom at transitionbrogwaun@phonecoop.coop.
