Mrs J V Horne
Pembroke Dock
MRS Jean Vilma Horne (nee Evans) of Queen Street, Pembroke Dock passed away at Withybush Hospital on January 2. She was 83.
Born in Front Street, to Jim and Doris Evans, Jean attended Pembroke Grammar School before commencing a career in nursing, initially in King’s College Hospital, London, followed by a period in Warwickshire.
On returning to Pembrokeshire in 1958 she worked for many years as a midwife in both Riverside and the South Pembrokeshire Hospitals.
In the seventies she became the medical receptionist for Doctors Thomas and Davies at their Law Street Surgery before ending her working life at the Further Education Centre in Meyrick Street, Pembroke Dock.
She will be remembered by many for her associations with the ‘South Pembs Crowd’ and Pater Pantomime Society; her presidency of the Martletwy Young Farmers Club and work with the Pembroke Dock Youth Club.
Helping young people played an important part in her life but her main focus was always her family.
A mother, grandmother and great grandmother not only did she provide support and encouragement to her own family but many young people benefited from the contribution she made to the above organisations.
In 1956 she married Reg Horne a native of Warwickshire with whom she had three children, Liz, Bill and Margaret and 53 years of happy marriage before his passing in 2009.
The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Liz Arthur and Margaret Edwards (daughters), Bill Horne (son), John Horne (step-son), Ian Edwards (son-in-law), Linda Horne (daughter-in-law) and Judy Horne (daughter-in-law).
Jonathan, Alex, Kate, Helen, Sarah, Ben, John, Rachel, Kathryn, Sam and Matthew (grandchildren) and Bethan, Ieuan, Harvey, Evan, Daniel and Lewys (great grandchildren).
Billy, Donald, John, Dorina and Rose (brothers and sisters- in-law).
The service was held at Pembroke Ferry Methodist Chapel, Pembroke Dock followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn and was officiated by Reverend Lorette Hinson.
The bearers were Ian Edwards, John Edwards, Bill Horne and Matthew Horne.
Donations to the Cancer Day Unit Appeal c/o Mr G Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by E C Thomas and Son of Pembroke Dock.
Mr Bryant Rees
Red Roses
THERE was a large gathering at St.Martins Church, Laugharne for the funeral of Mr Benjamin Bryant Edward Rees of Avola, Red Roses who passed away peacefully at home on November 10. He was aged 89.
From an early age Bryant was brought up at Avola and farmed there in partnership with his late wife Phyllis who predeceased him in 2007 and son Justin.
Bryant was no more happy than when showing his Pedigree Suffolk sheep from the “Roses Flock” at agriculture shows with successes both locally and far afield.
He later had the honour of judging the Suffolk Sheep class at the Royal Welsh Show during their centenary year and also the National Suffolk Sheep flock competition.
A past show president, he also served on the St Clears show committee.
Bryant was also made Burgess of Laugharne Corporation and was a founder member and past chairman of Dyfed Suffolk Sheep Breeders Association and Whitland Young Farmers Club.
Bryant’s other joy in life was music and played the church organ at Pendine for 40 years.
Always delighted to help he played the organ at many services and concerts .
Up until his death he still took a keen interest in the farm and carried on looking after his sheep.
The principal mourners were Justin (son); Anne and Darren Callan (daughter and son in law); Carys (granddaughter); Vincent (brother); and cousins too numerous to mention.
Rev Kingsley Taylor officiated, assisted by Rev Canon Bryan Witt, organist was Mrs Heather Jenkins. A poem was read by family friend Joan Seeley.
The bearers were Derek Farr, Nigel Towns, Philip Wilson, Philip James, Hulin Wilson and Roy Davies.
There were family flowers only.
The funeral arrangements were professionally carried out by E C Thomas and Son Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, SA67 8QH, who are still receiving donations for the Marie Curie Nursing Services (Carmarthen Branch).
Mr K Morris
Efailwen
MR Keith Morris of Penbanc, Efailwen, son of the late Bryn and Mattis, brother of Val and Les and the late Gareth, died peacefully after a long illness on Thursday January 1, at Glanmorfa Care Home, Kidwelly, aged 67.
He started work as a farm hand, at Ffynonwen, Blaenwaun and went on to work as a plant operator and later as a milk tanker cleaner at the milk factory in Whitland.
There was a family service at Maesawelon, Efailwen, with a public funeral at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was officiated by Emyr Wyn Thomas.
Unable to attend was Eirian Wyn Lewis.
The bearers at Maesawelon were Clive, Paul, Marc and Llyr (nephews and great nephew).
The bearers at Parc Gwyn were Les Owen, John Wheeler, Raymond Luke and Dewi Davies.
The family left to mourn were Val and Les (sister and brother-in-law); Clive, Paul, Sonyong, Marc, Helen, Sian and Stuart (nephews and nieces); Llyr, Kara and Gracie (great nephew and nieces) plus many other close relatives too numerous to mention.
There were family flowers only with donations if desired, c/o Mr Dennis Jones (funeral director), Maesawelon, Efailwen, Clunderwen to Glanmorfa Care Home, Kidwelly.
Mrs M Edwards
Jeffreyston
MRS Maria Edwards of Lynwood, Jeffreyston, Kilgetty passed away at the age of 88 at Withybush Hospital, on January 1.
Originally from Redberth she worked at Gascar Hotel, Tenby for Mr Jack Williams and Marina Milk Maids, Saundersfoot for Mr Dave Williams.
Her main interests were bingo, garden, flowers and her family.
The family left to mourn and principal mourners are George Edwards (husband); Malcolm and Jackie Harts (son and daughter-in-law); Colwyn and Sharon Harts (son and daughter-in-law); Melvin Morgan (son-in-law); Janice and Wyn Davies, Rebecca and Dan, Sam, Cerys (grandchildren); Iwan and Elin, Dylan (great grandchildren); many nephews and nieces and brother-in-law’s and family.
The service was held at Jeffreyston Church and was officiated by Rev Father Paul Davies and Rev David Faulkner.
The bearers were Colin Beynon, Terry Harts, Dave Beynon and Donald Allen.
There were family flowers only with donations for Jeffreyston Church which can be sent to Mr Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock SA72 6UR.

Mrs P W Skyrme
Pembroke Dock
THE death occurred at Morriston Hospital of Patricia Winifred Skyrme of Amphion Court, Pembroke Dock on January 5. She was 70.
Originally from Pembroke she worked at the Wollen factory, Monti’s Cafe, Queens Street chip shop and Meyrick Street chip shop and also at the cricket club.
Her interests included darts, knitting, and the Friendship Club. Pat was a very kind and generous lady with a heart of gold, she had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh.
Her door was always open to family and friends. Pat was a loving wife, wonderful mum, fun filled nanny and great nanny and a true and special friend to many. She had a big heart full of love and pride for her family.
She will be dearly missed but wonderfully remembered by all who knew her.
The family left to mourn are Steve (husband); Darren and Irene (son and daughterin- law); Lorraine and Gareth (daughter and son-in-law); Wayne, Charlene, Sophie, Daniel, Brandon, Callum and Conner (grandchildren); Jasmine, Cameron, Tiao, Joseph, Daley (great grandchildren); Eve, Marion, Stella and Caroline (sister-in-law).
The service was held at St Johns Church, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery and was officiated by Reverend Caroline Mansell.
The bearers were Darren James, Gareth Evans, Wayne Skyrme, Craig Bendall, Neil Goff and Mikey Boswell.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by E C Thomas and Son, of Llanteg.
Mrs E Higgon
Tavernspite
A very large congregation met at Carvan Chapel, Tavernspite on Tuesday January 13 to celebrate the life of Edith Higgon, who died peacefully at Withybush Hospital on January 4 aged 95 years.
Edith was born in Langholm, Scotland, where she spent her early childhood, before moving to South West Wales.
During World War 2 she supported the family smallholding at Red Roses, before marrying the late Douglas Higgon and moving to Tavernspite.
After Douglas’s death in 1983 she continued to live in the family home at Glen View.
Edith was a well-respected and much loved lady, who kept an “open door” to family and friends of all ages, and to a wide section of the local community.
Her reasoned, reflective, and independent attitude to life provided an inspiration for her many acquaintances.
Edith is survived by two children, Garnet and Janice together with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The service at Carvan Chapel was sensitively officiated by a family member, the Reverend Glaslyn Bowen, with the organ being played by Mrs. Sheila Brown.
The principal mourners were Garnet and Mattie (son and daughter-in-law); Janice and Harry (daughter and son-in-law); Annette and Paul (granddaughter and partner); Neil and Hayley (grandson and partner); Andrew and Rachel (grandson and wife); Joe (great grandson) together with numerous nephews and nieces.
Unable to attend were Rosie and Chloe Britten-Austin (great grandchildren).
The bearers were Messrs Neil Britten-Austin, Andrew Britten-Austin, Ken Davies, Allen Williams, Robert Hughes, and Bob Elward, assisted by Garnet Higgon and Harry Britten-Austin who held cords as in a traditional Scottish interment.
There were family flowers and the funeral arrangements were compassionately carried out by Mr Stewart Treharne of E.C. Thomas and Son, Llanteg.
