The future of adult and community learning services will be discussed by the council’s cabinet today (Monday, February 9) in the wake of Welsh Government funding cuts.

Learning Pembrokeshire is run by Pembrokeshire County Council and delivers learning opportunities to more than 60 locations across the county, including schools, libraries and village halls.

It is the second largest direct deliverer of adult and community learning in Wales, with 6,000 enrolments per year.

Last year, the Learning Pembrokeshire grant from the Welsh Government was reduced by just over 25 per cent25.3%, and in January this year, local authorities were told the funding for basic skills and ICT courses will be cut by £85,600 from April 1 this year, with the likelihood of a further funding reduction for 2016 to 2017in 2016-17.

In the light of these reductions, the council’s cabinet will discuss how the savings will be managed without a significant impact on learners and the range of courses on offer. There are three proposals, including removinggetting rid of the vacant lifelong learning coordinator post, withdrawing from the centres it maintains over the next 18 months and a restructuring of staff.

At this stage, it is proposed to retain the centre in Crymych as a Welsh language hub.
