A COMMUNITY defibrillator has been presented by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to Whitland cricket and rugby clubs.
BHF Ambassador Huw Roberts, who was brought up in Pembrokeshire, walked a 45-mile pilgrimage in honour of the Welsh poet Waldo Williams to raise over £5,000 for the BHF.
The pilgrimage started at the Quaker House in Milford Haven, where Waldo worshipped, through to Waldo’s birthplace in Haverfordwest, on to his memorial stone in the Preseli mountains and finished at his graveside in Llandissilio.
Dr Byron McNeil, on behalf of Whitland cricket and rugby clubs, expressed their gratitude for the donation of funds to acquire the defibrillator which is located by the sports pitches and is available to the local community in emergencies.
Walking with Huw was Alun Ifans, secretary of the Waldo Willams Association, He commented: “The association was delighted to assist Huw during the walk and to support a national charity which has used funds for the benefit of the local community.
BHF ambassador Huw, stated that it was a great delight to walk in honour of Waldo Williams though his home county, whilst raising funds for the local community and for the national charity.
This was the third major fundraising pilgrimage carried out for the BHF by Huw, who is an accountant in Cardiff. He has been inspired to raise funds for the charity because his father has had three heart pacemakers fitted.
The British Heart Foundation is the UK’s number one heart charity. It is the biggest funder of heart research in the UK and supports numerous community projects.
