PEMBROKE is kicking off its events to mark the centenary of the First World War this Saturday (February 8).

With the help of Pembroke Town Council, Planed and the Dyfed Archaeological Trust, Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society has organised The Great War Commemoration Event at Pembroke Town Hall, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Historian Simon Hancock will be giving a talk on ‘The Home Front in Pembrokeshire during WW1’.

There will be updates on Dyfed Archaeological Trust’s (DAT) WW1 Scoping Project by Alice Pyper of DAT and Kate Lindley of Planed.

An exhibition and coffee morning – with proceeds in aid of Pembroke Museum – will also feature.

People are invited to bring along photos to add to an exhibition on the impact of the war in Pembrokeshire.

Linda Asman, of Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society, said: “The history society is also putting together an exhibition of local photographs taken during this period and would like to invite members of the community to bring along to the event memorabilia and photographs for us to scan, plus any relevant information.

“Also supporting the event are the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society and Pembroke Civic Trust, and it is hoped other local heritage organisations will join in.”

All welcome. For more information contact Linda Asman on 01646 622428 or go to www.pembrokeandmonktonhistory.org.uk.
