THE mother of a 14-year-old boy who was found hanged at Pembroke School is setting up a service to help young people.
Derek Brundrett was found in a small wooded area near the school reception by his friends at about 1.30pm on Thursday, December 12.
More than 1,200 people joined a Facebook page dedicated to Derek, on which his mum, Kristina Wray, asked people to post ideas for a project in his memory.
Now she and others are working on Dezza’s Cabin, which will see a school cabin, where Derek used to spend time with friends, turned into a place for young people.
During the day there will be a signposting service for parents, but after school the cabin will be for children and young people.
“Derek had five self-harming incidents,” said Kristina. “When I was trying to get him help there were always barriers, walls, procedures.
“I know there are rules, I know there are procedures, but how far does a kid have to go before being listened to?”
The cabin will provide access advice on bullying and self harm, as well as counselling services.
More than £2,500 has already been raised by the community, but the main problem is finding a place to put the cabin and Kristina is looking for anybody with premises to rent.
“All of the kids want this, they really do, so let’s give it to them,” she said.
“I don’t want to blame anyone for Derek’s death. He was his own person with his own mind.
“He did what he did for his own reasons, which I still don’t really know. All I know is if he had had that support and help he might not have done what he did.”
