PEMBROKE Probus Club members enjoyed a captivating account of one man’s experiences as a school boy in Pembroke Dock at a meeting on Tuesday, January 21.
Guest speaker Dennis Williams talked about his time with the Air Training Corps when he experienced his first flight in a Short Sunderland, as well as his National Service with the RAF.
He also gave accounts of the bombing of the Llanreath Tank Farm and Pembroke Dock.
While in service, Dennis was stationed at Cranwell and Landow.
Among other memories he recounted the tale of an H P Tudor aircraft which crashed on its final approach to Landow. The cause was never determined. Theories ranged from a stray missile from Aberporth to people leaving their seats to be closer to the exits, seriously upsetting the trim of the aircraft.
President Geoff Hounsome gave a vote of thanks.
Nominations and elections for the new committee will take place at the club’s AGM in March.
Before the AGM, the President’s dinner will be held in early February.
