FISHGUARD and Goodwick Town Council was due to discuss a controversial driving ban last night (Tuesday, January 17).

Pembrokeshire County Council’s traffic manager John Price has written to the town council asking for its view on the retention or removal of a prohibition of driving order on The Slade in Fishguard.

It was introduced in December 1984 by the Preseli District Council and prevents driving on The Slade unless accessing premises on or adjacent to the road.

A request was made to remove the order by a local resident, who believed it was an unnecessary privilege

Fishguard county councillor Myles Pepper made an enquiry with The Slade residents on the retention of the order, and there was support to maintain the current arrangement.

He was later investigated by the Public Service Ombudsman, who found he used his position to create advantage for himself, as he failed to declare that he lived onThe Slade.

The resident who questioned the order said the enquiry should have been made to a wider group of residents from other streets, and also to local shops.

Pembrokeshire County Council is therefore asking the town council’s view on the matter.

In his correspondence Mr Price said: “The entry for access only order is subject to enforcement by the police. Removing the order would remove that obligation. However increasing the flow of traffic on The Slade may cause congestion and may be the reason for the order being considered necessary.”
