SPEED was a great divider at a meeting of Pembroke Town Council last Thursday (January 17).
Councillors were being asked for their views on a proposal to introduce a 50mph speed limit on part of the A4075 near Pembroke.
Seven members voted in favour of the proposal, while five voted against.
If imposed, the limit will run from Phillips Lane through Penny Bridge for about 1km to the 30mph limit at Pembroke.
Councillor Jon Harvey asked whether a reason had been given for the proposal.
He added: “Nationally we are seeing most of our A roads downgraded from 60mph to 50mph.
“Where there’s accident data, that’s no problem at all, but the danger is that this trend escalates and speed limits will be down to 40mph before you know it.”
Cllr Jonathan Nutting said the proposal was made after concerns over road safety were raised by Penny Bridge residents.
Cllr Wyn Jenkins proposed objecting to the 50mph speed limit.
“We need to bear in mind local residents, said Cllr Nutting. “This is just a reminder to slow down because you’re entering Pembroke.”
Cllr Linda Asman added: “People think roads are just for cars. I think we need to look in respect of other road users.”
