VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help run a community cafe in Fishguard.
Transition Cafe opened next to the town’s Co-operative food store in June last year, with the aim of providing people with nutritious meals and
reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfill.
Its volunteers collect, cook and serve perfectly good food that local shops and people would otherwise throw away.
The cafe has been running successfully since June and recently customers were asked in a questionnaire what they thought of the facility and how they would like to see it develop.
One of the answers that came back was that they would like the cafe to be open more days – at present it is only open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10.30am and 4pm.
Tracy Whistance, projects development officer for Transition Bro Gwaun, said: “If we’re going to be open more in 2014 we’ll need more volunteers. They don’t need to have any special skills or experience – just to be interested in what we’re doing and be willing to learn.
“They would join a team of volunteers who work together on a range of different activities, like recording, sorting and prepping all the food that comes in; planning meals, cooking and washing up; working front of house serving our customers and talking to them about what we’re doing; and marketing and publicity work. We have a wonderful group of volunteers and they’re great fun to work with.”
Transition Cafe was the brainchild of Ann Bushell, who said: “Many surplus food projects like food banks exist around the UK, but we don’t know of another project quite the same as ours.
“We use surplus food to provide a service for the whole community, and we also provide work experience opportunities for a wide range of people, including pupils from the local high school, young people from Point Youth Club and a number of disabled people.”
