MEMBERS and supporters of Goodwick Brass Band gathered for the annual dinner and presentation evening at the Fishguard Bay Hotel on Saturday, January 4.
The band enjoyed an incredible 2013, becoming Welsh League champions and lifting the UK national Second Section title in September.
The secretary Mike Hughes said: “Since Matthew Jenkins became musical director in 2008 we have entered 21 competitions and won first prize 15 times, gained second place three times and third place twice.”
He added that 2014 would see Goodwick competing in the first section for the first time in their 103 year history.
“Although it will be a big challenge, I am sure that with the continued support of our followers, we will be able to represent Goodwick, Fishguard and, of course, Pembrokeshire to the best of our ability,” he said.
The youth band also enjoyed great success in 2013 winning competitions in Burry Port in February and October.
Mike said: “The junior and youth bands plus the community band are important elements of our organisation, with Matthew and Luke working hard to teach and encourage the youngsters.
“There are huge benefits to youngsters playing a musical instrument such as learning discipline, providing a sense of achievement, promoting social skills, boosting team skills as well as relieving stress - and above all, it’s fun!”
He thanked all the band’s sponsors and supporters who help in funding instruments, music, uniforms and transport.
Prizes for the year went to: Most improved player, Dan Roche; Player of the year, Aled Meredith-Barrett; Players’ player, Geraint Harries; Section of the year, euphoniums and baritones; Community band player of the year, Sean Jenkins.
The awards were presented by Eric Mock, Grand Provincial Master of West Wales Masons; Cllr Arwyn Williams, chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council; Cllr Mike Lloyd, Fishguard and Goodwick deputy mayor; Dylan Thomas, Fishguard and District Round Table chairman; Gwilym Price, president of Goodwick Brass Band and Tony Evans, chairman of Goodwick Brass Band.
