AN open meeting will take place at 7pm tonight (Wednesday, January 8) to discuss the future of Fishguard Market.
It has been organised by the Fishguard and Goodwick Community Forum and will be held at Ffwrn, the former St Mary's Hall on Fishguard Square.
Pembrokeshire County Council is currently reviewing all four of the county's council-run markets, with the others in Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock and Tenby.
The decision was approved at a cabinet meeting in December.
A report by the council’s director of development said the markets are considered “not profitable, when taking into account whole costs of management and future capital requirements.
“The provision of markets is a discretionary function and the relatively modest size of the facilities limits the ability to generate significant socio-economic benefits for the county.
“Furthermore, there is no capacity being created for future investment into developing and improving the facilities.”
The options due to be considered in the review include: selling to a commercial market operator, letting to a commercial market operator, letting to third sector/tenant consortium, retention by the council, more appropriate premises and closure.
A report will be presented to cabinet in February.
Fishguard Market takes place every Thursday from 8am to 4pm in the Town Hall.
