Pembrokeshire County Council Elections - Post Election, Part 2

I wrote it based on information gleaned from Twitter, Facebook and the web pages of the Council and the Western Telegraph.

Having read this week's Western Telegraph, I see that 24 year old Paul Miller won the Neyland West seat for Welsh Labour, from the sitting Independent councillor, Maureen Molyneux.

I hope this will correct the blog and I was not ignoring his achievement as Welsh Labour is not exactly my favourite political party. It was purely because his age was not reported at the time.

I hope the 2 of them do make an impact, though Cllr Miller's comment of "I think there is a feeling that Neyland gets left out and I'm hoping to change that", may be a bit too optimistic.

What does he want for Neyland? After all, the new Primary School cost £4m.

Milford Haven councillors have said that their town is ignored and I guess you can say most other towns would say the same. We all know money is in short supply and things can only get worse as the cuts start to bite.

So well done Cllrs Williams and Miller and wishing you success as you fight your corners for your wards.

MEANWHILE, I understand that the Independent Political Group were due to have met yesterday and we will soon know if they have managed to have signed up 31 members or more, to ensure that their rule continues.

John Davies has generally had a successful 8 year term as Leader, judging by the comments I hear. It was common knowledge that he was going to take a back seat once the new Council meets and presumably, Jamie Adams has been nominated as Leader.

It will be interesting to see the makeup of the proposed new Cabinet and whether the Leader will have just one Deputy. I could never understand why we have had to have had 2, over the last 4 years. If the Prime Minister can manage with One Deputy Prime Minister, I am sure there is no need for 2 Deputies in Pembrokeshire.....

Things will get tougher and even in the recent Budget round, we were not made aware that services will be cut, leisure facilities to close etc... The press has not carried dramatic headlines saying "cash strapped Council forced to close x swimming pool to cut costs" or "500 jobs to go at cash strapped Council".

We have been lucky I guess, but I forsee that our newly elected councillors will have to make tough decisions and maybe Cllr Miller will be told that there isn't any money for Neyand....or anywhere in Pembrokeshire.... come to think of it....

FOOTNOTE - I have just seen on the Western Telegraph website that Jamie Adams has been elected as Leader and that he has over 50% of councillors signed up to his group.
