I print below, a letter I have submitted to the Western Telegraph, about the proposal by Sainsbury's to come to Haverfordwest.
Dear Sirs, As a consumer, I wholeheartedly welcome the idea of Sainsbury's finally building a 60,000 square feet supermarket in the Haverfordwest. I like shopping at Sainsbury's and I must say, I do not enjoy shopping at Tesco's. Thats a personal choice, but I am concerned at the power that Tesco's has, wherever you go in the UK and I would welcome the competition.
We have 2 supermarkets in Haverfordwest (Tesco's and Morrisons), plus 2 discount food stores in Lidl and Aldi. They cannot be described as supermarkets in the true sense of the word. There is also Iceland.
However, I can imagine that their planners are going to have a long fight on their hands as the traders in town argue about the effect of another supermarket in Haverfordwest. The Town Council may raise many concerns as well.
Sainsbury's got its feet in the door in Tenby, when they took over the former Somerfield store, but that is very small and carries a limited range.
So I guess Sainssbury's will have a long fight on their hands as the planning issues are raised and debated. Still, I guess the Cardigan store will open in the near future, so when work takes me there, I will have to go there.
Anyone hoping they will be able to shop in Sainsbury's in 12 months time will probably have far longer to wait and no doubt, Tesco's will not welcome another competitor on their doorstep. Lets see how it goes and what goodies Sainsbury's are offering the town as part of the application.
Yours faithfully, Andrew C. Lye
