It was 12 years ago that it was announced that the world's population had reached 6 billion. Today, we are told it will see the birth of number 7 billion. Apparently, it took until the 1800's for the population to actually reach 1 billion as disease, famine, wars saw most people off at a relatively young age.
The BBC website had a program on which you could insert your date of birth and it will calculate what number you were. I was in the 2.9 billion range.
As the population is likely to continue rising at an exponential rate, I cannot but wonder where it will all end as land is not being created. Resources are being used at a fast rate of knots.
Some may believe that climate change is the issue we should be concerned about, I wonder what the world will look like in 100 years time. Will there still be civilisation as we know it, or will the world be fighting over the remaining resources as there is no way that everyone will get onto a spaceship and to another planet that resembles our own planet. After all, it was over 40 years ago that man landed on the moon and we still haven't really progressed to explore the solar system.
The world seems to do nothing to reduce or slow down the level of population growth. I am normally an optimistic person and prefer to see good, but for once I feel that we should be seriously concerned if man is to survive beyond a few more generations.
