With all the talks of cuts to public services, one of the easiest targets is public toilets. Some Councils have closed theirs and others have introduced charging.
For a tourist destination like Pembrokeshire, tourists expect toilets to be easily available and I know I am critical when I visit places, if they are closed, charge, or are non-existant.
Also, people have medical conditions which mean they need regular access to a toilet and being self employed myself, I need them when out on the road. So a Council that closes facilities in winter or after 4.30pm are not very popular with me. After all, not all of us are vandals, or have a desire to use a toilet for any other purpose other than what they are there for! So a closed toilet is a great annoyance when I am working.
It annoys and disturbs me that there are idiots who think its fun and acceptable to vandalise such a facility as its us as Council Tax payers that have to pay for their repair and councillors decide its better to close a facility to save costs on running costs and repairs. A very shortsighted decision, but understandable if repairs end up costing MORE that the day to day running costs.
I was annoyed that the loos in Manchester Square, Milford Haven were boarded up for several months, due to vandalism, as I use them, when I park in the nearby car park, as they are more convenient than the ones at the bottom end of Charles Street.
I saw workers repairing them the other week and they have since re-opened with what looks like solid metal doors. I am grateful that Pembrokeshire County Council has reopened them and fully appreciate they are in a Catch 22 position. If it wasn't for the idiots that vandalise them, those few idiots spoil it for the rest of us.
As the doors appear to be of metal, rather than the usual wood type, I now wonder whether the metal thieves will now target them and rip the doors of and take them to a scrap merchant to sell for scrap.
I hope Pembrokeshire County Council retain their public toilets as their closure sends the wrong message to visitors and they are a VITAL service to residents of Pembrokeshire, as well as visitors.
