In Pembroke Dock this morning, I filled up the car with 27.5 litres of diesel at Asda, at a cost of £35.73 (129.9p a litre).
Assuming the 61% figure is correct, which is the percentage of the cost that goes to the Government, that means for very little work, the Treasury has pocketed £21.79 in fuel duty and VAT. Not bad for a 3 minute wait at the pumps. £7 a minute!
The other £13.94 goes to pay for the oil. Transport it from the Middle East. Refine it in the UK. Transport it to the pumps. Cover costs of employees and everyones profits.
Highway robbery? That comes to mind.
Just remember how much you are giving the Government, when you fill up the car, as its effectively a tax on going to work!
