I would like to congratulate the Welsh government's Rural Affairs minister Elin Jones for pressing ahead with plans to cut TB in cattle. Recently, Elin Jones put forward an order to enable the government to conduct a cull of badgers in an area of north Pembrokeshire in an effort to control the disease which is now costing the Welsh taxpayer around £30m per year.
TB is one of the major issues facing our agricultural industry and the lack of action to stop the spread of the disease from previous governments has been disappointing. Once Elin Jones took over as Wales' Rural Affairs Minister, she began the difficult but urgent task of getting to grips with TB. Last year 12,000 cattle had to be slaughtered because of Bovine TB and I'm glad that Plaid in Government is now tackling this issue seriously.
Having spoken to many farmers in various agricultural shows over the summer it’s quite clear that this issue is a major concern to many farmers and they are keen to see the Minister's plans implemented. We cannot allow this situation to continue to get worse as previous governments have done. We are taking firm action to get the job done.
