I have recently been criticised for wanting to stop lorries parking illegally at Goodwick Moor car park. Currently it appears that the lorry drivers of two companies in particular are parking there overnight and weekends. As there are no toilet facilities the drivers are using the hedgerows instead which I think is absolutely disgusting. There is a Scout Hut practically in the same car park and a rugby pitch next door. No one would want their children going anywhere near what’s being left behind by these drivers.
I understand that some are arguing that the Pembrokeshire council taxpayer should fund toilet facilities at this car park. However, I don't see why the taxpayer should fund this facility just for one or two companies. No other companies are abusing this car park facility in the same way. There is a large car park with a toilet block at Penblewin roundabout which could be used instead. I know it’s 30 miles away but if we have got the facilities there then why not use them?
Some have suggested that these companies are also contributing to the local economy. However, as far as I am aware they do not have a base in Pembrokeshire or indeed Wales and one can argue that they are only passing through. Surely, it would be far better if these companies bought a piece of land by setting up a lorry park offering proper facilities to their drivers and paying business rates like any other business. At least in those circumstances they would be contributing something to Pembrokeshire. This would also create a level playing field and ensure that Pembrokeshire based businesses are not disadvantaged.
