Many post offices are already facing closure in west Wales and this is without any proposals in Pembrokeshire. I am led to believe that announcements affecting Pembrokeshire will take place at the beginning of June.
Post Office closures have a huge impact when taken in a rural context and I will be fighting to keep as many post offices open in my constituency. I am told that closing a post office in a community will be replaced by a mobile service which will only be available a few hours per week. This in my opinion is totally unacceptable. Closing down such a valuable service is like ripping the heart out of a village.
The closure of post offices and service variations have a huge impact on our communities. They will hit pensioners, the disabled and mothers with young families the hardest and I will fight for the retention of these valuable services.
Governments at all levels must be doing much more to provide its services through the post office network. By doing so at least some post offices will have a better chance of survival.
