We may be experiencing another cold snap, but the De Valence is red-hot this week with two sizzling nights of entertainment.
Billed as ‘the battle of the sexes’, these two entirely different nights of fresh new talent feature a twist on an old classic, with an all female production of Shakespeare, followed by a male dominated line up of live indie music from three exciting acts.
The fun will start tonight (Thursday), with Trinity University College’s performance of The Taming of The Shrew, a darkly comic tale of disguise and deception.
Beating the men at their own game, women will be playing both the female and male roles, giving a youthful shake-up of one of Shakespeare’s earliest and most controversial comedies about the sexual politics of marriage.
Produced and performed by third year students, the flamboyant Petruchio wins the unruly Kate’s hand in marriage, but struggles to cure her temper and scolding tongue with his unconventional methods. Meanwhile, a plethora of suitors vie for the hand of gentle Bianca.
The all-female ensemble will take the production across the south west in what it hopes will be another success, following the recent production of the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood in December 2009.
After the high drama and laughs of the night before, Friday will take a different direction with live music, headlined by the sensational Dukes of Jetty.
Kicking off the night will be Swansea-based band the Electric Revelators, the official support act for The Animals. The band’s vibrant mix of Chicago, Texas and British Blues makes a welcome return to the De Valence, following an appearance at the 2009 Tenby Blues Festival.
The Electric Revelators will be followed by poet and musician Patrick Jones, who has won many fans through his unique poetry performances.
He is set to play at the Laugharne Literary Festival in April following the release of Tongues for a a Stammering, which includes collaborations with The Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire.
Headline act The Dukes of Jetty have seen their star rising over the last few months, by wowing audiences at more than 96 gigs throughout the UK.
The group is tipped to be one of the biggest acts of 2010. Noting their influences as The Beatles and The Kinks, the Rugby-based band have made numerous appearances on BBC Radio including Radio 2’s Janice Long Experience, as well as being named band of the month by both BBC Coventry and BBC Warwickshire for October 2009.
Riding such a wave of success, Friday night’s gig promises to be an exhilarating example of fresh new music from the up-and-coming indie band.
Both nights are set to leave little room for disappointment, and are sure to be the perfect way to start the weekend.
Tickets for both nights are available at the De Valence box office. Call 01834 843 568 or visit www.
