Ever fallen in love with the most wonderful, beautiful person in the world and been unable to act upon it because of the way you look?

In today’s image obsessed society, Cyrano, which is performed by Theatr Na n’Og at the Torch Theatre next week, still strikes a chord.

The ultimate tale of unrequited love, this new adaptation and re-invention of Edmond Rostond's classic play tells the story of a man who has everything: the courage of a lion, the heart of a poet and the nose of… well… just don’t mention the nose.

“Cyrano de Bergerac embodies so many noble attributes,” enthused the play’s adaptor, BBC television and radio scriptwriter Keiran Self.

“He’s a warrior, a poet, a rebel and a glorious romantic, but all his bravado is quelled by insecurity about the way he looks.

“This is why he has remained an enduring creation; he’s a hero with flaws.” Today, of course, Cyrano could just have a nose job, but it was down to prosthetic wizardry to create a nose for the stage.

Geinor Styles, artistic director of Theatr Na n’Og explains: “The nose and how it looked is vital for this production, which is why we approached Mark Cordory, a special effects wizard who has created some of the effects for Torchwood and Doctor Who. “With assistance from the prosthetic team at Principality Medical in Newport and make up artist Claire Williams, the nose job is incredible.” Hilarious, moving and gloriously romantic, Cyrano is performed by an eight-strong company of actors.

They are accompanied by original music composed and recorded for this production by the multi-talented TV and film composer, Dyfan Jones.

Cyrano is played by Robert Lane, a director and formidable classical actor, who has been enticed back to his native Wales to perform the title role.

The play is at the Torch Theatre on Tuesday, November 4th at 7.30pm, with a matinee and an evening performance on Wednesday, November 5th. Tickets can be booked by calling the box office on 01646 695267.
