THEATR Gwaun Community Trust continue our season of films during the next two months with an eclectic mix of films, both mainstream and specialist, writes Jill Edge, of the theatre.
Films to look out for are Philomena, for which Judi Dench is nominated for a Golden Globe as is Idris Elba for his role as Nelson Mandela in ‘Long Walk to Freedom’.
The Selfish Giant is a powerful and moving contemporary fable about friendship, greed and exploitation and likely to be compared with the compassionate drama of Ken Loach at his very best and won the Europa Cinema Label, Cannes 2013.
White Elephant features a troubled young priest played by Ricardo Darin who brings presence and authority to this heartfelt film about tackling drug gangs in a Buenos Aires slum.
In February, we are hosting our very own Film Festival of Spaghetti Westerns, cowboy films about the American West made, especially by an Italian director, in Europe.
Films include Ringo and his Golden Pistol and the original DjangO, both directed by Sergio Corbucci.
For the romantics Moonstruck is the choice for Valentine’s Day which won three Oscars in 1988, one for Cher as Best Actress.
It tells the story of Loretta Castorini, a bookkeeper from Brooklyn, New York, who finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother of the man she agreed to marry.
The Great Beauty, screening at the end of February, is nominated in the best foreign language category at this year’s Golden Globes and is Peter Bradshaw’s (Guardian film critic) best film of 2013.
This comedy drama, Italian cinema at its best, is about Rome, true love, decadence and values; unmissable!
