An RAF investigation is to take place into an incident in Pembrokeshire this afternoon, where a Chinook helicopter is understood to have hit power lines.

Around 500 homes in the east of the county were left without electricity after the incident at approximately 3.30pm near Summerhill, Amroth.

The Chinook, which was on a training sortie from RAF Odiham, Hampshire, landed safety in a field adjacent to Meadow House Caravan Park.

The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Rich Elford, and his five crew members were unhurt.

Speaking exclusively to the Western Telegraph, Flt. Lt Elford said that he made a precautionary landing after the aircraft had 'suffered an incident' in which it sustained 'minor damage'.

He added his thanks to local people, police and the caravan park staff for their assistance and courtesy following the landing.

Said a police spokesman: "The main thing is that everybody is safe and well."

RAF Odiham is the home of the RAF Chinook force, and its media and communications officer, Flight Lieutenant Rachael Lee, said: "We can confirm that a Chinook helicopter has landed in a field near Tenby. All six of the aircrew are safe.

"A specialist technical team is on the way to recover the aircraft, and it will then be examined by engineers, after which a full investigation will take place."
