Bike riders are being warned to be vigilant after a stretch of wire was ripped off a fence and strewn across a busy cycle path between Johnston and Haverfordwest.
Pembrokeshire County Council’s Walking and Cycling Officer Paul Smith said it could only have been the work of adults as around 30 metres of wire was taken from along 20 posts, held in place by one inch long staples.
The Western Telegraph reported a similar incident in March when a Haverfordwest resident was knocked unconscious after she was thrown from her bike on a cycle path near Johnston School.
Mr Smith said: “Stupidity has consequences. It might have seemed like a good idea at the time but at that stretch of the path it could have been fatal.
“There are probably 50 cyclist a day, even in winter, and several hundred in the summer. It’s one of the busiest paths in Wales.
“People coming down the hill could have been doing 20mph easily. It could have been really dangerous and much worse than the incident in Johnston.
“This was beyond a joke, someone could have been severely injured.
Anyone who witnesses anything suspicious on cycle paths is urged to contact Paul Smith at Pembrokeshire County Council on 01437 775 435 or Police on 101.
