It's perhaps difficult for gamer's of a certain age to comprehend but the Gameboy is twenty years old this year. In those twenty years the seminal handheld has sold around 120 million units.
Since it's launch the device has become synonymous with Alexey Pajitnov's puzzle classic Tetris. The game was given free with early Gameboy's.
I can remember visiting the United States as a teenager in the device's launch year and being as excited about picking one up as I was about flying for the first time. The flight back to the U.K. passed in a series of tumbling tetrad's and spent batteries.
The Gameboy is the most stubborn of all games machine's. Perhaps this is the key to its success and longevity. It quickly tamed Atari's Lynx and easily shrugged off all other handheld competitors.
A visit to Nintendo's flagship retail outlet, the Nintendo World store in New York reveals that they have on display an original Gameboy that was significantly fire damaged and partially melted in the original Gulf War. It still works!
